It is the design that should make the BMW 1 Series more competitive in the segment.

The new BMW 1 Series, created from scratch, must compete with the Mercedes-Benz A-class, whose design is brighter.

To help us understand the appearance of the novelty, the head of the BMW design department, Domagoj Dukek, published a video where he explains why the new model of the 1st series looks that way and not otherwise. A similar explanation was given after the criticism of the increased grille of the BMW 7-series.

Naturally, the treatment begins with an explanation of the size of the radiator grille, which fits into the new idea of the company – the larger the model, the more “nostrils” it has. The headlights of the car are slightly higher, which also corresponds to the new BMW style. The edge extending under the door handles makes the silhouette of the hatchback more dynamic. The back of the car has sharper lines, and the taillights – L-shaped.

Domagoj Dukek talks in detail about the transition to a front-wheel drive platform and recognizes that customers have never been interested in a compact car with rear-wheel drive. At the same time, he claims that modern technologies allow the new BMW 1-Series to be better than the rear-wheel drive version. For example, under the hood, you can place a 2-liter turbocharged engine with a capacity of more than 300 hp, which transmits its high torque to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes-AMG A35, by the way, is also equipped with a 2-liter engine of the same capacity and all-wheel drive system. Coincidence? We do not think.

How buyers will react to the new generation of the BMW 1 Series is still unknown, but it is clear that BMW is still seriously competing with Mercedes-Benz and Audi. The debut of the novelty will be held in June as part of #NextGen. In the same place will present the new BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe, which will go on sale in September this year.
