Who is better off-road – Ford Ranger, VW Amarok or Toyota Hilux?April 1, 2020
Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok are the three largest names in the European truck market. In a new video from the Carwow team from the YouTube channel of the same name, enthusiasts try to find out which of these pickups is more designed to conquer off-road.
All three medium-sized trucks are equipped with turbodiesel engines. Ford has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 213 horsepower (500 Nm). Toyota pickup received a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 148 hp. (400 Nm). Finally, the VW candidate comes with a 3.0-liter V6 rated at 204 hp. (500 Nm).
Trials include a hill race as a test of their traction and acceleration.
Trucks also have to crawl over very rough terrain, and then they climb up a steep slope. Next up is a race around a narrow, U-shaped stretch of rough terrain. Finally, there is a test of how these trucks can go down the hill using their descent control systems — cars go down the dirt hill.
While Ford and Toyota pickups have such important features as a low-range gearbox (low gear) and a rear differential lock, Amarok only manages traction control and off-road driving. However, VW technology is good for its truck to win several trials. The final test involves passing trucks through the pond and finding out.
