What to buy for $100 000: the updated Range Rover Sport

February 8, 2020 0 By autotimesnews

Six screens in the cabin, nine engines to choose from, a craving for off-road driving and a few more facts about a very charismatic SUV for $ 100,000

It sounds like a sports car.

The inconspicuous Sport nameplate on the fifth door is not just a marketing story. Range Rover really tunes for an active ride: a “heavy” steering wheel, lightning-fast reactions to pressing the “gas” pedal and, of course, an exhaust that communicates exclusively with bass. Moreover, the exhaust system is the very part that distinguishes the Range Rover Sport from its competitors. At first, a deliberately sporty accent seems inappropriate, but after a couple of days you get used to it so much that during dynamic starts you muffle the radio to listen only to this deep hum.

But there is a problem: a gasoline “six” sometimes does not correspond to an overly athletic mood. It has 340 forces and 450 N · m of torque – decent figures by modern standards, if not for one circumstance. Range Rover Sport weighs as much as 2.2 tons, so lightning starts are not about him. The claimed 7.2 s to 100 km/h are very similar to the truth, but after 120 km / h the Sport noticeably surrenders and picks up speed is not so fervent.

But how much grace in its dynamics! Slightly crouches on the rear axle, disperses sleepy birds with a powerful roar and, allowing slight slipping, breaks away. Before my eyes there are only huge numbers of the projection screen and a giant straight hood. From the driver’s seat to confuse Range Rover Sport is impossible with any other car.

However, complaining about the lack of dynamics is stupid. There are hybrids, diesels, and even modest two-liter gasoline options. At the very top – the feisty SVR with compressor V8 5.0 with a capacity of 575 hp. This one gains a hundred in 4.5 s and is able to accelerate to 280 km per hour.

He has too many screens

This is like an epidemic. First, Audi began to install 3-4 monitors in its models: one, instead of dashboard, another is responsible for multimedia, and the third and fourth are, as a rule, a projection and a climate control unit. The Range Rover Sport went even further and for some reason put the monitors in the headrests. In an age of smartphones and tablets the size of an ironing board, this seems like just a non-modern solution.

However, after two weeks of operating the Range Rover Sport, I finally realized who these monitors were for. It’s simple: the target audience is preschoolers who do not yet have their own gadgets. I uploaded the necessary content directly to the built-in hard drive, fastened the passenger into a child seat – and that’s all, the trip was a success.

By the way, unlike the same Audi, in Range Rover monitors are not so easily soiled. Carrying a cloth with you and activating a special cleaning regimen every day is not necessary. However, there are still problems with speed: sometimes the system suddenly turns off the phone, thinks for a long time after quickly switching the playback source, and regular navigation is still far from perfect. Although, of course, in comparison with what we saw on the dorestyled Range Rover and previous Jaguar XF, this is definitely a huge step forward.

Range Rover Sport is not shy off-road

If you still think that Range Rover is bought only because it is big and everyone is afraid of it, then this is not at all the case. It’s all about charisma: there is a huge choice in the class, but none of the competitors is able to offer the same captain’s landing with a wide direct hood in front of his eyes, incredible ride and unshakable speed at extreme speeds and on a very bad road.

Yes, there are cars in the class that are noticeably superior to the Range Rover on the road, but they are hardly as good on perfect asphalt. Lexus LX, Chevrolet Tahoe, Cadillac Escalade will drop in where it seems that you can only be by helicopter, but they can not stand the competition with Range Rover in terms of everyday comfort.

At the same time, Range Rover Sport, of course, does not hesitate to move out of the asphalt. He has an advanced air suspension with several modes of operation, in the most extreme of which he is able to increase clearance to an incredible 278 millimeters. He also calmly crosses rivers up to 850 mm deep, is not afraid of sand and deep gauge – there are special transmission modes for this. Moreover, as a rule, you do not need to configure anything: in a difficult situation, Range Rover Sport will do everything on its own.

Range Rover almost stopped stealing

The best news for current and future Range Rover Sport owners is not six screens in the cabin, not a 575-strong version and not even an advanced air suspension, but the fact that hijackers’ interest in English SUVs continues to decline. In 2018, Range Rover Sport did not even enter the top twenty hijacking ratings among premium brands. In total, 37 cars left in an unknown direction last year. The leader of the rating is Lexus LX (162 cars), Mercedes E-Class (160) is in second place, and BMW 5-Series (117) is in third place. Moreover, Range Rover Sport, according to the report of the organization Ugona.net, steal much less often than a large Range Rover – 37 against 68 cars (9th place in the rating among the entire premium).

The price tag on the Range Rover Sport does not look so frightening. Moreover, after restyling, the model has significantly changed, becoming even more charismatic and comfortable.
