The racer was able to independently crawl out from the wreckage of the dragster

During one of the NHRA’s quarterfinal drag races, there was a serious accident. The car of one of the riders literally fell apart in two parts in the air. Fortunately, the athlete who was piloting the dragster was able to leave the accident site on her own.

The quarterfinal race was held as part of the Camping World Drag Racing Series in the Top Fuel class. This category provides for the races of special dragters with a capacity of more than 10,000 horsepower. Fireballs compete on specially built tracks, on which they sometimes reach speeds of more than 500 kilometers per hour. In this regard, such competitions often end in serious accidents.

The presented race was attended by 32-year-old racer Leah Pruett. At the moment, it is not known what provoked the accident, but immediately after the start, you can see how the car takes several times to the left, after which the dragster literally takes off over the track and falls apart in half. The rear of the car, where the cockpit with the pilot is located and the engine, having made a revolution in the air, lands back on the asphalt.

In flight, the racer manages to release the brake parachutes, so the collapsed car is dragged along the track for several meters by inertia, after which the car stops. Despite a terrible, at first glance, accident, the woman was able to leave the destroyed car on her own, showing that everything was fine with her. She says she owes her life to the safe design of the dredger and the location of the chassis. At the same time, the pilot urged all drag racers to always be willing to take risks.

Two years ago, another serious accident occurred during drag races. At Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Illinois, a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Dragster was rescued. The car did not open the brake parachute, and it was possible to stop it only with the help of a safety net.
