VW denies rumors of hotter Golf R PlusNovember 14, 2020
Volkswagen’s R sports division has made it clear that a more powerful version of the eighth generation Golf R compact hatchback, such a car would have received the Plus designation, will still not be unveiled.
The Volkswagen R sports team is very attentive to comments on YouTube videos of the new Golf R. When someone in the comments asked, “Will there be a Plus model?” The answer was clear: “Thank you for your interest! No additional models planned 🙂 Best regards, your VWR team.
For a while, there were rumors of an even more vicious Golf R.
It was speculated that VW intended to use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in this version of the hatchback and add hybrid support to it to increase power to around 402 horsepower. This version of the car was supposedly not supposed to appear before 2023.
The challenge for the Golf R Plus is that the Volkswagen Group would not want it to steal the limelight from the high-performance Audi RS3 Sportback. Given the hierarchy of brands, VW’s car should probably be cheaper, less powerful, and not as luxurious as a premium Audi.
The new Golf R debuted in early November. It won’t go on sale until the end of next year, and prices aren’t available yet.
The turbocharged engine develops 315 horsepower (420 Nm). Buyers can opt for a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox. VW indicates that up to a speed of 100 km / h, the car accelerates in 4.7 seconds, and the maximum speed will be 250 km / h.
