Volkswagen revealed the design of an electric sports prototype for the Pikes PeakMarch 19, 2018
Volkswagen presented a sports electric car called I.D. R Pikes Peak. The debut competition for the novelty will be the race at Mount Pikes Peak, which is also known as the “Race in the Clouds”.
The annual event is held in the USA in the Rocky Mountains from 1916 near the city of Colorado Springs. The length of the route is 19.99 kilometers. The start is at an altitude of 2800 m, and the finish is located at 4302 m above sea level. Last time the Volkswagen brand took part in the Pikes Peak more than 30 years ago – in 1987 a special version of the Golf model with two 652 horsepower engines fought for the victory.
Technical specifications Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak are not yet called. Externally, the electric car resembles sports prototypes that participate in endurance races, including “24 Hours of Le Mans”. It has a large front splitter, as well as a massive rear fender.
The last electric car of Volkswagen from the new family I.D. became the concept car I.D. Vizzion, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. The serial version of the prototype will appear after 2022 and will be a replacement for the production flagship sedan Phaeton. Volkswagen I.D. Vizzion is equipped with two electric units: on the front axle there is a 75 kW (102 hp) engine, and on the rear there is a motor that produces 150 kW (204 hp). In total, the aggregates produce 225 kW, which is equivalent to 306 horsepower.
The serial production of new generation Volkswagen electric cars will start in 2020. The first representative of the family I.D. will become a compact model, and after it will appear a crossover, minivan and a flagship sedan. By 2025 the Germans are planning to launch more than 20 cars with electric power units in the series.
