Volkswagen is preparing another GTI modelApril 22, 2020
The second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan has been around since 2017 and has been the best-selling model in the United States for the past few years. But the competition has since tightened, and soon the time will come for serious crossover updates.
A radical update to the Tiguan exterior design is indeed planned. The result will be a more dynamic and courageous crossover, complemented by a new 100 percent LED design, a new hood and front panel. A group of VW officials directly involved in the project hinted that more Tiguan variants are expected, including a more powerful engine variant. In this regard, the question arises: will the Tiguan GTI appear?
“I think that we are always looking for ways and means to search for more economical engine options and, yes, with more power. So I think the answer is “yes,” said Hein Schaefer, senior vice president of marketing and product strategy for Volkswagen.
The German manufacturer also earlier confirmed that it wants to “enrich the Tiguan line with a productive version”, although one should not expect that it will be a full-fledged version of the Tiguan R, which will soon be sold in Europe. This vehicle is likely to be powered by a 333-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with standard AWD. However, there is a problem with pricing, at least in the US, where most buyers are reluctant to overpay, and instead choose the Audi Q5.
Nevertheless, America will definitely receive a new version of the Tiguan R-Line, which is really more of a design package. But VW doesn’t want to leave Americans without the high-performance Tiguan, and the Tiguan GTI might be the best solution. The company has already announced its intention to “launch the GTI nameplate” in the United States, where it is assigned only to the Golf GTI. In Europe there is a Polo GTI. Another possible Tiguan option that you can consider is a version with off-road paraphernalia.
According to the American publication, if the United States had to choose between the Tiguan GTI / GLI or Tiguan Basecamp, they would prefer the first option, and, judging by the statements of Schafer, Volkswagen agrees with this. The updated Tiguan will debut later this year as the 2021 model. It is possible that the Tiguan GTI will not be too far behind.
