Volkswagen is preparing a new crossover and investment of more than 653 million euros for South AmericaNovember 13, 2017
Also part of the largest offensive of Volkswagen on the market of this continent will be the seven-seat version of Tiguan, which will go on sale in Brazil at the beginning of next year.
As part of its new strategic plan, the German manufacturer Volkswagen will try to rebuild its business in the South American market, delegating responsibilities to the field. Previously, the management was centralized, directly from Wolfsburg. Since 2020, it will be releasing a completely new crossover model for South America. To do this, more than $ 653 million will be invested in its Pacheccho plant in Argentina. This is stated in the company’s press release.
The new crossover will be based on a localized version of the global MQB platform. It is positioned for the segment of affordable cars on the South American continent. This model will be one of 20 future innovations for this market, which must be submitted before the end of this decade.
The novelty, most likely, will receive the name Tharu and will be a converted version of Skoda Karoq. According to preliminary data, the car will be offered with a 1.4-liter TSI engine with a capacity of 150 horsepower, also produced on the continent. More technologically advanced 1.5 TSI motors will also be available for this new product.
“Volkswagen believes in the great potential of the South American continent. Investments will create optimal conditions for the efficient production of our new SUV, built in Argentina for the markets of South America “, – commented on the press release Volkswagen South America CEO DiCi.
