Volkswagen introduced the car for the assault Pikes PeakApril 23, 2018
The German brand is going to break the record in the near future on the arrival to the Pikes Peak hill. For the first time Volkswagen announced this event in the autumn of last year, but only now the company presented a technique on which it will try to break the record – the electric prototype I.D. R Pikes Peak.
The car is created in the best traditions of sports prototypes: traction on wheels is transferred by two motors with a total return of 680 horsepower, so acceleration to 100 kilometers per hour takes only 2.25 seconds, which according to Volkswagen exceeds the standards of Formula 1 and Formula E cars. Weight The prototype is 1,100 kilograms. The batteries of the prototype are lithium-ionic, and the prototype also has an energy recuperation system that will restore 20% of energy during braking.
A few words about the exterior. As you can see in the photos, the prototype received a very developed aerodynamics: on the perimeter of the car there is a flat bottom for generating a ground effect, the clamping force will also generate a powerful rear wing fixed to the body with the help of two keels.
In order to beat the current record, the prototype needs less than 8:57.118 seconds. This task will be dealt with by 39-year-old racer Romain Dumas, who twice won in the races 24 hours of Le Mans, 24 hours of the Nurburgring and 24 hours of Spa.
Volkswagen emphasizes that when creating this prototype, the task was not so much to reach maximum power, as to achieve a balance between power and controllability.
In the past, Pikes Peak’s recipe for conquest consisted of a two-engine arrangement of cars and advanced aerodynamics, so very specific cars like the second-generation Volkswagen Golf with two turbocharged 652 horsepower engines were very often launched.
At the start of the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak will be released on June 24th.
