Volkswagen ID.R set its 5th record: watch the videoSeptember 29, 2020
The electric racing car is rolling out technologies for powerful civilian models.
Volkswagen ID.R is the absolute champion of high-speed climbing on the Pikes Peak and Goodwood hills and the Chinese serpentine Road 99 turns, as well as the fastest electric car in the Nurburgring. But this is not enough for the Volkswagen Motorsport division: now the all-wheel drive 680-horsepower sports prototype has also set a record at the German Bilster-Berg circuit.
The electric car covered the 4.2-kilometer track in 1 minute 24.2 seconds. This is immediately 20.5 seconds better than the result of the previous champion – Radical SR3 SL. Note that this time it was not Romain Dumas who was driving, but Dieter Depping, and the record itself was not exactly an end in itself: the pilot showed this time, testing the car in preparation for another event – Goodwood SpeedWeek, which will be held on October 16-18.
Earlier this year, it became known that technologies originally developed for ID.R may find application in the civilian sports cars of the Volkswagen ID family. Allegedly, Wolfsburg has even developed several design options for the coupe and roadster. It is assumed that the status of these “charged” electric vehicles will be higher than the “heated” IDs. GTX, but so far all these are plans and speculations.
Today the line consists of the rear-wheel drive hatchback ID.3 and the off-road vehicle ID.4. The latter will receive a powerful all-wheel drive version next year, and about a year later, it will be based on the ID.5 GTX cross-coupe.
