Volkswagen ID.3 electric motor can be hidden in a bagNovember 24, 2019
Since 2023, VW intends to produce 1.4 million of these electric motors annually
The Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback’s electric motor develops 204 horsepower, but is compact enough to fit in a sports bag.
The new electric motor, developed by the Volkswagen Group Components, received the designation APP 310 and will soon find use in the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback. The abbreviation APP in its name means the location along the wheel axle, and 310 – the value of the peak torque. A brushless permanent magnet synchronous electric motor develops 204 horsepower and will be produced at the Volkswagen factory in the German city of Kassel. The rotor and stator for it will be produced in Salzgitter.
Volkswagen plans to produce 500,000 APP 310 electric motors in Kassel annually, and from 2023 a Chinese plant in Tianjin will join the German site, with the help of which the output should increase to 1.4 million copies a year. The developers are especially proud of the fact that the mass of a 150-kilowatt electric motor is only 90 kilograms and it is so compact that it fits easily into a regular sports bag.
