Volkswagen denied common myths about electric carsMarch 18, 2020
Volkswagen Press Center published an essay in which it refutes the seven main shortcomings of electric vehicles, which, according to the authors, are based on prejudice.
Conventionally, these shortcomings have three directions – economic, practical and related to security. As for the high cost, Volkswagen compared the cost of the Golf 1.5 TSI hatchback (26,640 euros in Germany) and an electric car of the same class ID.3 (23,430 euros in Germany). In addition to receiving subsidies for the purchase of EV, buyers gain operating benefits due to fuel savings, ease of maintenance and low insurance costs.
There is an opinion that, due to the small power reserve, electric cars are unsuitable for long-distance travel, they have nowhere to charge, and the battery has a short service life. The company refutes this by the presence of a quick charge function in its models, with which up to 80% can be charged in 30 minutes. As for the charging infrastructure, until 2020 the company promises to increase the number of charging points in Germany from 6,700 (in 2018) to 24,000, and the warranty on the branded battery is 8 years.
There are rumors about the high fire hazard of batteries in electric vehicles, as well as about environmental damage along the entire chain of their production. According to a study by the German Automobile Association (ADAC), the flammability of electric vehicles is comparable to vehicles using traditional fuels, and lit lithium-ion batteries can be extinguished with water. Volkswagen batteries are packaged in airtight boxes with a sturdy frame and automatic opening in the event of an accident. In addition, VW has already launched a factory for the disposal of 3 thousand lithium-ion batteries per year and in the near future will develop it to the network.
Thus, technological progress in the industry and its prospects leave no doubt that the efficiency of battery production will grow rapidly, and new types of electrochemical generators will be invented much earlier than the natural reserves of lithium are exhausted.
