During 2020, the German automobile concern Volkswagen wants to increase the share of renewable energy in the supply of electricity to its plants to 90%.

This was reported by the press service of the concern. At the same time, the statement notes that the company’s plans will not affect branches in China.

In 2019, the leadership of the German concern adopted a comprehensive program to achieve a neutral CO2 balance in all areas of its activities by 2050. Subsequently, the company said that in order to achieve the goal it is necessary to increase the share of renewable energy sources from the current 70% to 90% by the end of the year.

The program will also make the transition of its own generation from coal to gas, Volkswagen said in a statement. Currently, work is underway to install a combined cycle gas turbine unit at a plant in Germany that will operate in the mode of joint generation of heat and electric energy (cogeneration)

As a result, CO2 emissions from electricity and heat generation will be reduced by 60%, or about 1.5 million tons per year, which is equivalent to emissions of about 870 thousand cars.
