Often old cars rust very quickly. And the point here is more in the processing methods and technologies used.

Using an example of an innovative body shop in Wolfsburg, Autonews experts found out that there are currently five main methods to combat the occurrence of corrosion on the body: seals in joints, good sealing of cavities, honed paint and varnish technology, galvanizing and anti-corrosion coating with the so-called “sealing”. Moreover, all possible protection options are thought out even at the stage of designing the body.

An important component of the longevity of the body is high-quality steel, which over the past decade has gained a lot of useful properties – it has become denser and stronger, which allows the production to apply more protective materials, and the finished body remains more resistant to rust. In addition, the shape of the body elements themselves plays a significant role. Volkswagen engineers pay particular attention to door panels.

“Car doors are usually exposed to moisture and are therefore called“ wet areas ”. Rain water flows into the door from the window, but does not linger there, but exits through special drain holes. In the lower cavity of the door, where the inner and outer parts converge, the engineers provided triple protection. The cavity itself is filled with industrial glue, like all thin seam seals, and wax is applied to the inner parts of the door, ”the edition quotes the representatives of the brand.

Modern bodies are treated with chemical anti-corrosion compounds and pass dynamic tests using the method of artificial aging. In total, 6 protective layers are used. Since 1991, the company began to galvanize – this is the first protective layer. After that, the part is phosphated by immersion in a bath with a chemical solution. Next is the cathode coating, the body is coated with filler, primary color and varnish. Thus, a multilevel protective layer with a total thickness of only 1.5 human hair is formed on the surface.

In the process of manufacturing a particular car model at special training grounds, dynamic tests are carried out for corrosion resistance, moreover, a different type of road surface is simulated, and the equivalent to six-month tests is 12 years of normal driving. However, despite all the measures taken, the metal continues to be exposed to the environment and, as a result, to rust. This is a natural process and it can only be slowed down.
