German carmaker Volkswagen began shipping its first Taos vehicles from its Puebla plant in Mexico to the United States, two months after starting production of the model for export markets.

The first batch of compact crossovers departed aboard the Mediterranean Highway, which is part of the Volkswagen Group’s fleet, on Friday to various ports in the country.

“With the first units of the new Taos entering the US market, Volkswagen de Mexico is meeting another goal in time, celebrating the SUV’s success story despite the challenges in production due to the coronavirus pandemic,” said Suzanne Lehmann, North America Production Manager. “We estimate that this model will have good demand in the North American market, which recognizes the quality of the cars produced in Mexico by Volkswagen.”

Introduced back in October in specs for Latin America and the US, the Taos 2022 is a compact SUV that looks the same for the two markets, with the exception of the side marker lights, which are mandatory north of the Mexican border. Inside, there are more differences as the Latin American cockpit features the VW Play infotainment system borrowed from the new Nivus, while the North American variant uses the proprietary MIB3 and 8-inch touchscreen display.

The 2022 Taos for Latin America is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that is supposed to produce 148bhp. power and 250 Nm of torque. The North American version is offered with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with 158 hp. and 250 Nm, which is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. A 7-speed DSG transmission is also available, albeit with an optional all-wheel drive system.

Pricing will be announced shortly, but since the new product is positioned as the “little brother” of the Tiguan, it will be more affordable. The initial MSRP of the latter in the US is $ 25,245.
