Valtteri Bottas: Something is wrong with my carSeptember 21, 2019
In recent years, the track in Singapore has always been one of the most uncomfortable for Mercedes, but this time it seems that we managed to avoid problems. On Friday, Lewis Hamilton showed the best time, and the only pilot to impose a fight on him was Max Verstappen. But Bottas’s affairs are much worse so far – in the first training session he crashed the car, and in the second he lost to his partner for more than a second …
Lewis Hamilton (1st): “You always feel shocked when you get behind the wheel of a car in Singapore for the first time because the track is very uneven, the circle is very long, and the air is so hot that the car looks like a sauna. But the first day was not bad.
We have completed the entire planned program and continue to improve the car, so I’m quite satisfied. Today I felt much better in the car than in the previous few weeks, and I hope this will be the case throughout the weekend. New asphalt was laid in several places, I was able to achieve good tire performance.
If you find the right rhythm, it’s very nice to drive around here, so I enjoyed it. But everything doesn’t ideally happen, we have areas in which I need to add. The start was good, but the Red Bull Racing cars are very fast, and tomorrow we will need to do everything right. “
Valtteri Bottas (4th): “Not an easy day. At the end of the first session, I had an incident, because of which the work had to be completed somewhat earlier. I lost control of the rear of the car in the 19th turn, and there are no departure zones on this route, so errors are expensive.
In the second session, I did not have enough pace in every attempt, so I’m not quite sure that everything is in order with the machine. I just felt that I could not go faster, and this will need to be sorted out. I felt friction in the steering system, which made it difficult to feel the car properly.
I think that tomorrow the struggle between the three leading teams will be quite tight, which means that we need to add, especially in the third training session. ”
Andrew Shovlin, chief racing engineer: “In the past, it was not always easy for us to play on this track, but this time the car works pretty well. For Lewis, the day went well, he showed a good pace and with full tanks, and on a fast lap, and from the first exit he was pleased with the car. On a track like Singapore, you can always play a little more, and the better the balance, the closer the rider can get to the limit, but we have a good basis for further work.
For Valtteri, the day turned out to be difficult, during the second attempt he lost control of the rear of the car at the entrance to the 19th turn, after which the first session ended for him, and the car received quite large damages. We managed to quickly repair it, but during the second session Valtteri did not feel comfortable in it, so we have to understand what could cause this problem.
After the first session, we were called to the stewards because of the fuel. “We set the temperature incorrectly, but, fortunately, this is just training, otherwise we would have received a more serious punishment than a fine.”
