Toyota made friends with the Chinese for autonomous technologyAugust 28, 2019
Toyota has partnered with Pony.ai to test autonomous vehicles in real world conditions. Lexus cars equipped with an autonomous system developed by Pony.ai startup will drive through the streets of Beijing and Shanghai (China) starting next month. It should be noted that Pony.ai is already testing robotic taxis in Guangzhou.
Toyota previously announced that it will work on autonomous technologies with the Chinese company Baidu, as part of a partnership autonomous buses for both companies will be developed. It should be noted that the startup Pony.ai was founded in 2016 by former Baidu employees, Tiancheng Lu and James Peng, who were involved in software development. Pony.ai currently employs around 500 people.
PwC Consulting predicts that autonomous cars in China will account for 35% of new car sales by 2030, which is 10% higher than the forecast for the United States.
