Toyota Launches New Acceleration Suppression System

The Japanese automaker plans to gradually introduce the system, called Plus Support, in all new vehicles and already sold cars in Japan to help prevent various accidents caused by improper use of the accelerator pedal.

Toyota Motor (Toyota) announced today that it has developed a new acceleration suppression system, in addition to the existing system, to further prevent serious accidents and reduce the damage caused by erroneously pressing the acceleration pedal. On July 1, Toyota launched the Plus Support system for new cars and added this feature to a modified acceleration control system when the pedal is misused for use in existing cars.

In 2012, Toyota introduced the Intelligent Sensor (ICS) for new vehicles, and since 2018 launched a modified acceleration control system when pedals are improperly used for existing vehicles.

These existing systems help prevent accidents caused by erroneously pressing the accelerator pedal when sensors detect obstacles such as a wall or glass. According to Toyota, ICS helps prevent approximately 70% of all potential accidents that might occur due to driver error. However, new technologies need to be developed to reduce the remaining number of accidents, including accidents in situations where there are no obstacles.

This time, at the development stage, Toyota first studied real accidents in which the erroneous pressing of the “gas” was the cause, especially paying attention to situations when the accelerator pedal was fully depressed. The characteristics of these situations were then compared with big data collected from connected Toyota cars. Japanese brand engineers were able to identify and calculate cases of improper use of the accelerator pedal. In turn, this made it possible to establish a function to reduce the number of accidents caused by improper use of “gas” by controlling acceleration even in the absence of obstacles.

The Prius and Prius PHV models released on July 1 are already equipped with the new system. In the future, it will be implemented on other cars of the brand. Activation of the new system starts automatically when the car doors are opened with a smart key. Even if there are no obstacles in the way of the vehicle, this system detects incorrect use of the accelerator pedal and suppresses acceleration.

In addition to ICS, which detects obstacles, suppresses acceleration and applies brakes, Plus Support aims to further prevent serious accidents and helps reduce damage caused by improper use of the accelerator pedal.
