Japanese company is developing a long-wheelbase version of the popular sedan

The Chinese joint venture, FAW-Toyota, will launch a special Corolla luxury version. From ordinary sedans, the Corolla L will differ in an increased wheelbase, original equipment and a new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. In the Middle Kingdom, the long-base Corolla will go on sale in a year.

Details about the “stretched” modification Toyota Corolla learned the Chinese edition of Autohome. Sources say that for the sedan in the L-version they will prepare a 100 mm insert, that is, the wheelbase will be increased from 2700 to 2800 millimeters, and the total body length will be 4735 millimeters. However, it is possible that such a serious extension will be abandoned in favor of a smaller insert, so as not to overload the GA-C platform.

The long-wheelbase Toyota Corolla will become an exclusive offer for the Chinese market, because businessmen and officials in the Celestial Empire are in demand versions with an increased wheelbase, focused on comfort. In the coming months, the new Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata will turn into “limousines”.

It is expected that the Corolla L will be equipped with a new turbocharged three-cylinder Toyota M15C engine with combined injection. The 3-cylinder Turbo will produce 118 horsepower and 146 Nm of torque, and the power unit will not complement the existing range, but will replace the current four-cylinder engines 1.2 (turbo, 116 horsepower) and 1.6 (atmospheric, 140 horsepower).

FAW-Toyota does not plan to export long-wheelbase Toyota Corolla sedans outside the Middle Kingdom. The model will enter the domestic market in 2021, but the official specifications will probably be released before the end of 2020.

In parallel, Toyota is developing on the basis of Corolla a new low-cost crossover for developing countries – the premiere of the SUV will take place in a year.
