Toyota is preparing a new hypercar worth $ 3 millionAugust 4, 2020
It will be the road legal version of the upcoming Hypercar Class Le Mans race car.
The world has been eagerly awaiting the debut of the new Hypercar class this year at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which will replace the current LMP1 class. The famous endurance race was originally scheduled to take place in June this year, but has been postponed until September 19, 2020 due to the pandemic.
Under the new rules, manufacturers can create racing prototypes identical to existing legal hypercars. Toyota and the Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus have already confirmed they will participate in the new Hypercar class, while Aston Martin is postponing plans for a racing version of the Valkyrie hypercar.
Toyota unveiled the new Le Mans hypercar in the form of the Gazoo Racing GR Super Sport concept at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Show. It has now become known that Toyota plans to develop a road legal version of the GR Super Sport Concept show car.
According to the rules of the racing series, manufacturers must produce at least 20 copies of road legal versions of their Hypercar race cars within two years. Details are still not disclosed, but foreign sources claim that the GR Super Sport road car will be powered by a twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine. Power output is still unknown, but Toyota’s new hypercar sprints from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.5 seconds and to 200 km / h in less than seven seconds.
The original GR Super Sport concept used a twin-turbocharged 2.4-liter V6 hybrid delivering a combined output of 986 horsepower. To comply with traffic regulations, the design of the street car Toyota GR Super Sport will need to be “softened” as the concept lacks even a rear window.
Following the hypercar’s debut in racing, deliveries of the road-going version of the Toyota GR Super Sport are expected to begin in 2022, but it is not known how many units Toyota will produce. Each copy is expected to cost around 2.4 million euros
