Toto Wolff recalls his favorite raceApril 10, 2019
Formula 1 is preparing to celebrate the 1000th Grand Prix in the history of the championship – the anniversary race will be held this weekend in China. On this occasion, the press service of the FIA publishes a series of memoirs of famous representatives of the world of motor sport, which tell about the place in their life Formula 1.
Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff spoke about one of his most memorable races.
Toto Wolff “Races, which for one reason or another, remember, a lot, but especially precious memories for me are connected with the 2014 Austrian Grand Prix.
Firstly, this is my home race, and in 2014, thanks to the efforts and vision of Dietrich Mateschitz, Formula 1 returned to Austria – for the first time since 2003. When the Grand Prix takes place in your home country, it is always a special event. You anticipate it, you are overwhelmed with emotions, and you want to speak successfully to compatriots. In general, you feel very positive feelings, and I love it when the races are held in Spielberg.
Secondly, numerous pleasant memories of that time when I was still living in Austria, were younger and worked as an instructor in the racing school of Walter Lechner, located just at the Österreichring circuit, are associated with this route. In those days, I learned a lot about autosport and life in general. For me it was a kind of university.
I led a simple lifestyle: I lived in a village house next to a highway that belonged to one wonderful family. These people fed me, and in the evenings they managed to create a glorious atmosphere, and I felt like a relative of them. I liked it all, because it seemed that I was on the way to my dream – to become a racer.
If we talk about the Grand Prix of 2014, then in the qualification we were not the best way: Nico Rosberg showed the 3rd result, and Lewis Hamilton was only 9th. But the race went great. In my opinion, already on the first lap Lewis made his way to the 4th position, and in the end, the drivers of Mercedes were able to win a double.
Niko ahead of Lewis, but the cherry on the cake for me was that on that weekend Valtteri Bottas first rose to the podium, speaking for Williams, because it was my team before I went to Mercedes. And his partner Felipe Massa took the 4th place. I had a feeling that I am in a special way connected with all the drivers on the podium. And in general, that Grand Prix was incredibly successful. ”
