Police in Los Angeles do not use most of the hundred purchased electric cars BMW i3, which became part of the environmental program of law enforcement agencies to “greening” the lineup. On the other machines police officers travel on personal business. This was clarified as a result of the investigation of the local television channel KCBS-TV.

The Los Angeles Police Department signed a contract with BMW two years ago. The police leased 100 electric cars i3 and purchased charging stations for them – in total the amount of the agreement reached 10.2 million dollars. Cars were planned to be used as official vehicles and for working with the public.

Nevertheless, as journalists found out, most electric cars have not traveled thousands of kilometers in two years, and the run of the most “popular” cars does not exceed an average of three thousand kilometers. In this case i3 is used not for official, but for personal trips. For example, police officers drive these cars to a nail salon, to eat at a restaurant or for children to school.

Journalists accused the police of “burning” taxpayers’ money and the desire to advertise instead of really starting to use environmentally friendly vehicles.

Previously, the police of Los Angeles also stated that it would not be limited to 100 copies of the BMW i3. It was planned to purchase another 500 cars within five years.
