The successor to the BMW i8 will receive a 600-horsepower electric motorApril 28, 2020
Last year, BMW announced the discontinuation of the i8. Now begins the new details about his successor.
According to foreign media reports, the model is under development and was announced on the Vision M concept last year. It is reported that a model inspired by the M1 will follow in the footsteps of the i8 and will use an environmentally friendly powerplant. However, the new car will be more performance-oriented, for which the i8 three-cylinder gasoline engine will be replaced by a turbocharged four-cylinder. In addition, the model has an “electrified front axle” and a rear electric motor with a total power of about 600 hp.
Updates do not end with the engine, as the model is expected to have a significantly improved battery. Details are limited, but we can expect the electric mileage to be at least 96 km, which would be a significant improvement over the 29 km in the BMW i8. According to preliminary information, the car will use an updated version of the i8 chassis with a carbon monocoque.
If everything works out, the hybrid sports car will appear in 2023 and will compete with the Acura NSX and Porsche 911 Turbo. This is quite serious competition, and it seems that we can also expect a serious increase in prices. Although there is no official information yet, it is rumored that the i8 successor will cost about $ 160,000, which will be a significant increase to the base price of the i8, which is estimated at $ 147,500
