The new Volkswagen Polo will turn into a rally carNovember 7, 2017
Company Volkswagen has published a new skateboard rally version of the new generation Polo hatchback. The Rally Car Polo GTI R5 will be available in the second half of 2018 as part of the WRC World Rally Championship.
The car is being developed under the direction of Francois Xavier-Demeson’s Volkswagen Motorsport Technical Director. The specialist was responsible for the creation of the Polo R WRC, where Sabastien Ozhier became four times the world champion in rally.
The new sports car will be offered both to professional racing teams and amateur teams. The car will be able to participate in various competitions around the world, including the WRC2 class (former category Super 2000).
The Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 is equipped with a two-liter four-cylinder turbocharger with 270 hp, a five-speed sequential gearbox and a full drive system.
Previously, it became known that Volkswagen engineers began to develop a “civil” R-version of the compact hatchback Polo new generation. The release of such a modification will not be problematic, as the current Polo GTI uses a deformed version of the two-liter engine from the Golf R, on which the unit produces 300 hp. In addition, from the Golf R, the compact hot hatch can get a full drive system as it is built on the same MQB modular platform.
At the moment, Volkswagen has already released several prototypes of the future Polo R. At the same time, the management of the concern has not yet made a final decision to launch such a car in a series.
