The new Volkswagen Golf R will be the fastest in historyNovember 27, 2019
The VW Golf R takes on a new look and powerful 4WD drivetrain, and exclusive images demonstrate its extreme style. This is the first look at the all-new VW Golf R after it was tested in South Africa.
Even in this single photograph, there are a few tips that it is more focused than any previous Golf seen before. Firstly, the wheels are very similar in design to the additional 19-inch Pretoria wheels used on the previous generation Golf R. These wheels neatly fill the arches, hinting that the ride height has dropped slightly compared to the standard Golf.
The front bumper is very similar in design to the already released Golf GTE hybrid module, but a large intercooler protrudes from the grille. Unlike GTE, the lattice element is not highlighted, but finished in silver.
The specs of the next Golf R have not yet been confirmed, but Volkswagen bosses have already confirmed that the fastest iterations of the Mk8 Golf will have a power of over 300 hp. As before, the drive is configured to use the VW 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.
For this iteration of the Golf R, a soft hybrid system is expected to provide extra performance. Unlike smaller versions of the new Golf, which provide a small electrical boost to reduce the load on the internal combustion engine, it is likely that the next R’s hybrid assistance will come in the form of an electric compressor. In principle, similar to the system used in the Audi S6, this should help virtually eliminate turbo lags.
