The new Volkswagen Beetle will become a rear-wheel-drive electric vehicleNovember 11, 2017
Refusal from VW Beetle after removing it from the assembly line will not be. He will still receive the next generation. And it will be innovative.
The new generation of the retro-model Volkswagen Beetle can still get a green light, although it is not yet known in which year. However, it will become the representative of the new model range of VW electric vehicles based on the special MEB platform (Modular Electric Baukasten). This is reported by the publication Autocar referring to an interview with the chairman of Volkswagen Herbert Dies.
Volkswagen Beetle – one of the oldest models of the company, which is still sold on different continents of the world. The current generation is produced in 2011, and its sales are constantly declining, placing a large and fat question mark over it. Already there were rumors that low sales volumes and problems with dieselgate will force the German concern to abandon the retro model altogether.
“The next decision in favor of electric vehicles is the right direction. If we wanted to make a new Beetle, then an electric power plant with a rear-wheel drive would be the best choice. So it will be closer to its historically first version, “- said Herbert Dies.
According to Dies, the choice in favor of rear-wheel drive transmission is based on the fact that the original Beetle had a boxer’s rear engine and a drive to the rear wheels. However, the new architecture of the MEB is so flexible that it will allow to build in the future front-wheel drive co-planers “Beetle”.
