The world premiere of the seventh generation Subaru sedan took place at the Chicago Auto Show. Home sales are scheduled for autumn this year.
The new generation Legacy moved to the modular platform SGP (Subaru Global Platform), which also underlies the three-row Ascent crossover, the last XV, Impreza and Forester. The company reports that the “four-door” lowered the center of gravity, body rigidity and the front subframe increased by 70%, rear subframe – doubled. The share of super-high-strength steel in the body structure is increased by 13%, and the number of adhesive joints – by 371%. Front Legacy – McPherson strut, rear – suspension double wishbone.
The revolution in the design of the exterior of the seventh generation sedan did not happen, the most noticeable visual differences from the predecessor were the new headlights and lanterns, and those that lost the “legs” of the exterior mirror housing. Legacy length increased by 40 mm to 4840 mm, the old wheelbase – 2750 mm. The trunk volume has been increased from 425 to 428 liters (according to the EPA methodology).
The salon was redesigned much more seriously, now higher quality materials are applied, insulation is improved. And the main “trick” – a multimedia system with a vertical touch screen, like the models Tesla and Volvo. From the touchscreen, you can control navigation, “music”, climate control and other settings, there is an access point to Wi-Fi. But they didn’t give up on the physical buttons either – there are hot keys on the sides of the display. However, the base sedan will have multimedia with a seven-inch screen.
As expected, in the States Legacy will be offered with a four-cylinder turbocharged Boxer 2.4, which debuted on the Ascent crossover. The engine produces 264 hp and 376 Nm, with it a new generation sedan accelerates from zero to 97 km / h in 6.1 seconds. The basic engine 2.5 remained in service, but, like the last Forester, this engine has been significantly upgraded: it now has direct injection and increased compression ratio, power increased from 175 to 185 hp, torque increased from 235 to 239 Nm (acceleration time from 0 to 97 km / h – 8.4 seconds). In general, for this engine replaced about 90% of the components. But the six-cylinder engine 3.6 has been retired.
In all versions, the new Legacy is equipped with a Lineartronic V-belt variator. By the way, they also modernized it – they expanded the range of gear ratios, plus the CVT received a new hydraulic system. Four-wheel drive is already in the “base” (with the rear axle connection clutch).
The list of sedan equipment also includes: EyeSight security system complex (now it includes a retention system in the strip); The new DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation system, which monitors driver fatigue with the help of a small camera installed in the cabin; a wide-angle front camera that displays a picture on the display so that the car can safely leave the closed area; seat upholstery leather Nappa; eight airbags.
The new Subaru Legacy will reach American dealers in the fall, prices have not yet been announced. A previous generation sedan in the USA costs from $ 22,545 (excluding taxes and delivery). The predecessor loses customers: in 2010, 40,109 sedans were sold, which is 19.5% less compared to 2017. Competitors are also in the “minus”, but their sales are still significantly higher. For example, Toyota Camry sold 343,439 copies (-11%) last year, Ford sold 173,600 Fusion cars in the US (aka Mondeo, -17.2%), and Hyundai Sonata acquired 105,118 owners (-20% ).
Meanwhile, this year the next generation of the Outback off-road wagon of the new generation should debut, which will certainly be brought to Russia, because the current “shed” occupies the third place in sales among all models of the brand: in 2018 we sold 1199 such cars (on the first place – Forester from 4827 units, on the second – XV from 1743 units.).
