The first photos of the new Chinese version of the Audi A3 with an extended wheelbase have appeared on the Internet.

According to local Auto163, previous long wheelbase A3 prototypes were called the A3L. However, the prototype seen in tests was stripped of camouflage and had the usual A3 badge.

It remains unclear how much longer this A3 variant will be, but all A3 models sold locally will be manufactured at FAW-Volkswagen’s East China Qingdao plant. In addition to the sedan, the company intends to launch a Sportback model. There are no obvious visual differences between A3 models for the Chinese market and those sold in other countries.

For example, the new Audi A3 features sharp and aggressive headlights and three small air vents above the front grille. The A3’s front optics also feature intricate daytime running lights, while the rear of the updated A3 features sleek new LED taillights.

Inside, there is a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen for the MMI infotainment system. Overseas buyers are offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster for a surcharge, but it remains to be seen if this option will also be available in China.

A wide range of powertrains are offered for the A3 in Europe, but it looks like only one engine will be available in China. According to Auto163, the compact Audi will be powered by a 148bhp 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
