Next year McLaren will seriously tackle the electrification of its lineup with the first truly all-new production car since the 2011 MP4-12C – a plug-in hybrid.

The new model will launch in the first quarter of next year and go on sale in mid-2021. It replaces the long-established Sports Series, which includes the 540C, 570S and 600LT models. The new 620R, inspired by GT4 race cars, rounds off the range.

The Woking manufacturer will instead move into what it calls the High Performance Hybrid (HPH) subcategory, nestled between the McLaren GT and the current Super Series range of models. The new car will effectively replace the McLaren 570S, but it is expected to be more expensive than today’s sports cars.

Along with the new carbon-fiber-rich platform, the as-yet-unnamed model will be the first modern McLaren to ditch Ricardo’s 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8. In its place will be another powertrain created by the same company: a twin-turbocharged V6 mated to a plug-in hybrid system that claims to offer “amazing levels of performance and a unique driving experience.”

Some of the main characteristics of the power plant were revealed. The total system power will exceed the 562 hp offered by the 570S and is expected to well exceed 600 hp. Significant increases in torque are also expected to be available from the bottom.

“I’ve always said that my goal was to produce a hybrid with the same weight as the previous car. We are not going to do this, but we will be in the range of 30-40 kg, ”the head of the brand noted earlier.

Thus, the curb weight is expected to be around 1,500 kg. For reference, the Honda NSX hybrid weighs 1,725 ​​kg. Key to the weight reduction will be McLaren’s all-new lightweight carbon architecture – the MCLA. It was designed and developed at the McLaren Composite Materials Technology Center in Sheffield, where it will be manufactured.
