The failed GAC sedan succeeded generation: more luxurious and powerful, the size of a CamryAugust 27, 2019
In China, sales of the Trumpchi GA6 second generation (Trumpchi – the GAC brand for the home market) started. The model has radically transformed both outside and inside. Only one engine is still provided for the novelty, but it is more powerful than the previous sedan.
GAC Trumpchi GA6 of the first generation debuted in the China in 2014. That model was not in demand, the best year for it was 2017, when 25,032 copies were sold. But already in 2018, sales fell by 48% to 12,975 units, and in January – June 2019, only 3,379 cars were delivered to customers, which is three times less than a year earlier. However, the GAC decided not to abandon the GA6 – in the second generation it was made more luxurious than its predecessor. The new model was shown back in April at the Shanghai Motor Show, and today sales began in China.
According to preliminary data, the platform is the former – this is an upgraded version of the platform that the Chinese purchased from Fiat in 2008 (in particular, Alfa Romeo 166 and Lancia Thesis were based on it), they called their version G-CPMA. At the same time, the sedan has grown: the length has increased by 41 mm to 4,891 mm, the size of the wheelbase is now 2,815 mm, which is 95 mm more than the first GA6. Thus, the length of the sedan even slightly surpassed the Toyota Camry (4,885 mm), although the distance between the axles at Toyota is still greater (2,825 mm). Also, the GA6, in terms of dimensions, was not far from the local Honda Accord (4,893 and 2,830 mm, respectively). By the way, in China, the GAC has a joint venture with both Japanese brands, they also produce Camry and Accord.
Appearance GA6 made in the new corporate identity Trumpchi. The radiator grill became wider and “fell” to the lower edge of the bumper, the chrome dies on it are also larger now, round foglights, on the contrary, have decreased, and a luminous strip has appeared between the rear lights. In the top versions, the headlights are matrix. Models put 16-, 17- or 18-inch wheels.
The salon is also completely new. GA6 received a virtual dashboard, which is combined with a large screen multimedia system (but for expensive versions, the “base” has analog devices and a smaller touchscreen), the central airflow deflectors are made as a single line, they are located under the multimedia display, not on the sides of it, like its predecessor. The tunnel rang out in breadth, a small glossy black cover covers the box. There is also a washer on the tunnel with which you can control the multimedia system (but if you are too lazy, you can also use your voice).
Also in the list of equipment are listed (depending on the configuration): panoramic roof, all-round cameras, climate control, wireless charging for smartphones, side airbags and safety curtains, car park. Finally, GA6 has a “second-level autopilot,” as the Chinese call adaptive cruise control, which combines with automatic emergency braking and lane keeping systems.
The engine of the new sedan is one – petrol “turbo four” 1.5 (factory index 4A15J1), which produces 169 hp. and 265 Nm (the Trumpchi GS5 crossover is also equipped with the same engine). The box is also one – a six-speed automatic Aisin. The previous GA6 was available with a 1.5 turbo engine rated at 152 hp (235 Nm), with a five-speed manual or a seven-speed robotic gearbox with two clutches.
The price of Trumpchi GA6 lies in the range from 108 800 to 168 800 yuan. For comparison: both Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in China will cost at least 179,800 yuan.
Recall, the GAC is going to bring its “cars” to the Russian market, and by the end of this year. True, the GA6 sedan is not among the models planned for sale in the Russian Federation, at least for now. The GS8 flagship crossover will be the first to get to our country, then they should bring the GM8 minivan and the GS5 SUV already mentioned above.
