The crew of Alonso took another step to the titleMay 5, 2019
The six-hour race in Spa took place in constantly changing weather conditions, which sometimes acquired an extreme character. Periodically, it started to rain and snow, visibility deteriorated sharply, and then the safety car had to be released onto the track – it appeared four times.
In this situation, Fernando Alonso’s crew of Toyota No. 8 held a confident leadership position, while the second car of the Japanese concern’s factory team returned to the pits for about half the distance and was there for about ten minutes due to a fault in the hybrid part of the power plant.
And from the start, it was this team that was in the lead, who won the pole the day before, and at the third hour of the race his advantage grew to one minute, but then Kamui Kobayashi had to go for repairs.
Thus, the Rebellion car # 3 moved to the second position in the absolute standings, while the crew of the Russian SMP Racing team, consisting of Vitaly Petrov, Mikhail Aleshin and Stoffel Vandorn, moved to the third position.
Their companions, the crew of the sport prototype No. 17, composed of Sergey Sirotkin, Egor Orujov and Stefan Sarrazen, reached the 4th position.
The capricious weather in the Ardennes Mountains did not allow the “6:00 Spa” to be completed: about 10 minutes before the finish, precipitation in the form of rain and snow increased sharply, and it was decided to terminate the race ahead of schedule.
At this moment Fernando Alonso was driving the leading Toyota, so his crew scored the fourth win of the season, another step closer to the league title.
The second finished Rebellion car number 3, this is the crew of Thomas Laurent, Gustave Menezes and Nathanael Burton. The third and fourth places went to the SMP Racing drivers, which, on the one hand, was not bad, on the other hand, the crew No. 17 was faster than the rivals from the Swiss team, and if it was hardly possible to get ahead of Toyota even in such conditions, then to fight
The top five is completed by another Rebellion trio consisting of Bruno Senna, Neil Jani and Andre Lotterer, and the Toyota №7 sport prototype finished only sixth, and according to the results of the race, its crew scored 8 points, whereas the last stage of the season their advantage has grown to 31 points, which practically guarantees Fernando, Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima to win the championship.
This is with regard to the most powerful class LMP1, and in LMP2 the strongest (7th place in the overall classification) were the racers DragonSpeed Anthony Davidson, Roberto Gonzalez and Pastor Maldonado – this is their first victory of the season. The crew of the Russian G-Drive team as part of Roman Rusinov, Jean-Eric Verne and Yob van Eutert was second in its class and 8th overall.
In the LM GTE PRO class, the Aston Martin crew won the game with Maxim Martan and Alex Lynn – this is the second victory of the British team in the 2018-2019 Super Season.
