Test drive Volkswagen PassatAugust 31, 2019
It took about 15 seconds to photograph the dashboard with the numbers 210 km / h, and these were not the safest seconds in my life. The equipment did not mind that I completely let go of the steering wheel in the left lane of the unlimited autobahn, and without a bluff continued to keep the car in the strip even on the bends of the track, but I was very uneasy. Strictly speaking, at that moment I did not drive a car at all, trusting in the radars and cameras of the Travel Assist high-speed complex, and only after 15 seconds the electronics demanded to return my hands to the steering wheel.
It would be enough just to touch it, because the updated Passat determines the presence of the driver not by micromotion of the steering wheel, but by the presence of a hand on the steering wheel in principle. This leaves the driver some room for cheating, but believe me, at a maximum speed of Travel km Assist 210 km / h you do not want to inflate the electronics. If you don’t react at all to the calls of the system, the car will not stop steering, as it was at the previous iterations of adaptive cruise control, but will switch to emergency stop mode and gently, looking around with radars and cameras on the sides, will park on the side of the road – in case the driver got sick.
A step forward can be called those angles that the updated Passat is able to rotate on its own. Cruise control is so smart that it slows down before the bends of the route, and there really is a need for this, if you keep in mind that Passat turns steeply even at high speeds in automatic mode. And he does not turn off if the markings on one side disappear, I focus on grass or gravel on the side of the road.
In the same way, cruise control slows down in front of settlements and signs of speed reduction, and if they are not registered in the navigator, it does this in fact, having seen the tablet with the eye of the camera. At the same time, the smart Line Assist normally recognizes concrete blocks and yellow markings, it does not get confused in the difference of time lines in the places of repair.
I am ready to guarantee that in the sense of traditional driving disciplines Passat remained true to itself. The chassis, even in the case of a heavy all-terrain wagon, works simply chic in all modes, the brakes are perfect, the steering wheel is accurate, and DSG preselective boxes (by the way, seven-speed on all variants) work as clearly and invisibly as possible. Therefore, it is not entirely clear why the Germans made a multi-stage adjustment of the shock absorber stiffness for the adaptive DCC chassis: only a person with a particularly sharp stool feeling can feel the shades of settings in the range from good to very good.
In the engine range, too, no surprises, but the Germans had to adapt all the engines to Euro-6, which means the same evolutionary changes that have already passed with other models on the MQB platform. In Europe, the situation is this: the place of the initial 1.4 TSI is a one and a half liter engine with the same 150 l. with., followed by 2.0 TSI engines with a return of 190 and 272 horsepower. Two-liter diesel engines develop 120, 190 and 240 liters. s., and there is also a more economical hybrid version with an increased power reserve.
Only a motor with a capacity of 272 liters is worth regretting. S., which so easily allows you to dial allowed in Germany 200+ and so directly hold a place in the left lane of the autobahn. And if the dynamics do not seem crazy, then this is only because the Germans had already finished the ringing technique, providing the most comfortable acceleration without jerking and hysterical howling motor.
Here is a diesel engine with a capacity of 190 liters. with. not impressed, but this is not the engine that will carry the Passat along the left lanes of the autobahns.
Meanwhile, for the Germans, the hybrid Passat is almost a key product. That is why it was made a little friendlier, and if earlier it was a modification for technologists, now the driver only needs to know where to insert the socket. Passat GTE is charged from a household network, wall station or fast charging of alternating current or charges itself depending on the availability of current and the need for autonomous travel.
The declared range on electricity is 55 km in real or 70 km in the test cycle, and the prepared route with Passat GTE variable steepness roads overcame with an average consumption of 3.8 liters of gasoline per 100 km and did not discharge the battery at all. Recuperation works very effectively, the graphics of the devices in terms of the distribution of energy flows turned out to be extremely clear, and of the five modes of operation, three were left: electric, hybrid and sports GTE. The amount of energy conservation is adjustable through the menu.
In short, in urban conditions, GTE tries to use the electric drive more often, and when the battery is low, it tries to fill it faster. Together, the 1.4 TSI motor and electric motor produce 218 liters. with. and they offer very decent dynamics without regard to which unit is connected at what moment and what needs to be done to save more.
There is almost nothing to say about the impression the updated Passat makes live. Test cars are R-Line, Alltrack and GTE with powerful cheekbones of bumpers of varying degrees of strength and their special style of decoration. And they are all universal. The Passat R-Line looks brutal than the others in this trinity, especially in the new dense gray color of Moonstone Gray, but we definitely will not have such an option.
The cheekbones of the bumpers and the radiator lining slightly moving down are a common feature of all versions, which the sedan will have in a simple configuration. Judging by the photos, even the regular Passat now looks harsher, has more chrome and more kinks in the bumper, as well as transparent techno-optics with LEDs. The coolest option is with matrix headlights, but those that are simpler also shine and look very good.
If we omit references to the improvement of finishing materials, then the surest sign of updating in the cabin is the illuminated Passat sign in the place where the watch used to be. The Germans explain the rejection of the watch only by the fact that time is already everywhere – both on the instrument display and on the screen of the media system. The instrument display here now, like the Tiguan, is slightly smaller in size, but with better graphics and customizable themes – the view is changed with a button on the steering wheel, and if you dig deeper into the settings, you can change everything: from the set of information components to the color of the instrument edging.
You can choose from three media systems with a screen size of 6.5, 8.0 and 9.2 inches, as well as an entire digital platform under the general name Volkswagen We. She is not able to so much so far: for example, to automatically pay for parking, open a car for couriers of the delivery service or offer restaurants and shops, based on the preferences of the owner.
Volkswagen promises that prices will rise slightly, but have not yet given exact numbers. Dealers expect growth of about 10%.
