Tesla will build another plant outside the USFebruary 15, 2021
Tesla will have another site for assembling cars: the American company plans to build a plant in India. This became known from the report of the authorities of the state of Karnataka in the south-west of the country.
Tesla currently has two full-fledged electric vehicle plants in California (USA) and Shanghai (China). Gigafactory 1 in Nevada specializes in batteries, Gigafactory 2 in New York for solar panels, they are not related to the production of vehicles. There is also a site in the Netherlands, where electric vehicles are pre-assembled for the European market.
In 2021, two important factories should be launched at once: in Germany (Gigafactory 4) and the state of Texas (Terafactory 5). Thus, if Tesla’s factory really appears in India, then it will become the fifth for the company, not counting related or small industries.
Tesla has not yet responded to a request from Reuters asking for comment on its plans.
The head of the company Elon Musk previously wrote on Twitter about entering the Indian market. The last time he returned to this topic was in December 2020. At the same time, then there was no talk of establishing a local assembly.
Despite India’s proximity to China, the distance between Shanghai and the state of Karnataka is about 5 thousand km in a straight line. Germany is even further away (almost 7000 km). Thus, if the local market is really important for the American electric car manufacturer, then it will be costly for him to deliver electric vehicles from his factories from other countries.
