Tesla Roadster reached Mars orbitNovember 7, 2018
Aerospace company SpaceX spoke about the course of the space odyssey of an electric sports car Tesla Roadster, sent to Mars on February 6 of the current year. The car is intact, the pilot is in place, the music is still playing.
Elon Musk cannot be denied originality: the launch of an electric vehicle into space was the best PR action for Tesla and SpaceX, which could only be thought out, it attracted the attention of the whole world. The launch took place on February 6 at 11:45 pm at Cape Canaveral of Merritt Island (United States, Florida): the Tesla Roadster electric vehicle became the ballast load for testing the reusable Falcon Heavy launch vehicle. The machine safely rushed into space, but the launch vehicle did not return to earth: the central section missed the landing platform in the Atlantic Ocean and crashed (the side steps landed safely). Nevertheless, the tests were considered successful – Elon Musk even congratulated Donald Trump, despite the fact that the President and the entrepreneur had previously ceased to cooperate due to irreconcilable differences in political views (Musk was a member of the advisory council on innovative entrepreneurship).
Behind the wheel of the Roadster (this, by the way, is a personal copy of Elon Musk) is a mannequin dressed in a spacesuit named Starman, and during all these nine months, David O. Space Oddity and Is there Life On Mars?. The first currently played 74 266 times, the second 100 071 – playback will continue until the battery of the electric car sits down. Starman, perhaps, is doomed to hang out in space forever, unless, of course, he gets into any accident, such as a collision with Earth (6% probability), Venus (2.5% probability) or space debris, which in our galaxy enough.
The other day, SpaceX reported that Tesla Roadster successfully crossed the orbit of Mars, which Elon Musk is dreaming of colonizing. Electric car and Starman on the planet will never get – at best, close to 7.4 million km in October 2020. Now Tesla is located at a distance of 214.8 million km from the Red Planet and 248.9 million km from Earth – the current position of the electric car can be monitored at a special site. The electric car moves in a heliocentric orbit, so it will approach our planet from time to time – in particular, in 2026, 2031, 2039 and 2073. But in a SpaceX tweet, it jokingly states that the next stop of the electric car is “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe”, which is a reference to the novel by science fiction writer Douglas Adams from the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” cycle.
Meanwhile, Tesla is preparing to produce a new generation Roadster – its premiere took place in November last year.
