Tesla is interested in the production of vans Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with its electric power plantNovember 22, 2018
Tesla’s immediate plans for the release of new models include a pick-up truck and a towing vehicle, but why not an American company develop an electric vans?
That was the question asked on Twitter by Elon Musk, to which the Tesla CEO answered that it might be interesting for the company to cooperate with Daimler / Mercedes in the production of the electrical version of Sprinter. Musk assured that he would turn to a German company with such an offer.
However, Mercedes-Benz has already planned an independent release of the electric version of the minibus called eSprinter, which should go on sale in 2019 and have two versions with 115 and 150 kilometers, respectively.
However, the Mask does not seem to be interested in the electric eSprinter as such. Rather, he needs empty bodies from Mercedes. According to Mask, it is wiser to cooperate with Daimler in the production of electric minibuses than to develop them from scratch.
Musk believes that cooperation may consist in the supply of bodies from Mercedes, on which Tesla installs its electrical equipment, including batteries, control units and power plants. Although the official opinion of Daimler is still unknown, but a company spokesman has already replied that Daimler is flattered by Musk’s interest in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
Note that if such negotiations begin, they will not be the first collaboration between Tesla and Daimler. From 2009 to 2014, the German company owned a 9% stake in Tesla, which in the same period supplied Daimler electric power units for the first generation Smart and Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive.
