Tesla door handles accused of mortal dangerOctober 26, 2019
The automaker was sued. The reason was the death of 48-year-old anesthetist Omar Awan, who suffocated in the Tesla Model S salon, which caught fire after the accident. The lawsuit notes that retractable door handles prevented the man from leaving the cabin.
Shortly before the accident, the electric car drove at a speed of about 145 km / h in the area with an authorized speed of 80 km / h, and then the driver lost control of the car. “The fire consumed the car, and Dr. Omar Avan burned beyond recognition. This is because Model S does not have standard door handles and there is no other way to open the doors, and in addition, there is an unreasonably high risk of fire, ”the lawsuit says.
Tesla management announces that Model S doors automatically unlock and that all door handles extend automatically when the airbag is deployed. If the door handles do not work, the doors can be opened manually if you break the window and use the internal door handle. Emergency services are already trained to work with Tesla Model S.
However, in the event of a serious accident, according to the initiators of the trial, the fire may be too strong, so it will be practically impossible to remove the driver or passengers from the Model S.
It should be noted that some owners complained about the malfunctioning of Model S door handles even under normal conditions. It is known that this problem is more common in models released in the early years. However, problems with door handles have not been officially recognized as a security defect.
