Tesla changes plans to build a plant in EuropeJune 4, 2020
Due to criticism from environmentalists, the American automaker is forced to adjust its plans so that the European company Tesla could earn as early as 2021.
Tesla has faced criticism from local residents, concerned about deforestation and water use associated with the construction of the plant. Initial clashes with environmentalists resulted in a temporary halt to construction on a court order in February. However, new adjustments that will be presented this or next week will solve some of these problems by reducing the amount of fresh water needed and wastewater generated. This statement was made by Jörg Steinbach, Brandenburg Minister of Economics, where the plant will be located. According to him, after an eight-week public review process, open hearings will be held by early September.
“We expect that in the end the proposal will be more environmentally friendly and, therefore, even more favorable for the population. I assume that in the first half of next year the cars will be produced from the assembly line, ”Steinbach said in an interview.
Tesla CEO Ilon Musk has decided to build the brand’s factory in central Germany to challenge Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz Daimler, as the country intends to significantly increase sales of electric vehicles. This is a bold move, given that battery-powered cars are just starting to develop in Europe’s largest economy. And when it comes to major infrastructure projects, the country is notorious for bureaucracy, which can annoy an independent American inventor who is used to going his own way.
