Tesla abandoned the PR departmentOctober 6, 2020
The American electric car manufacturer became the first company to disband the PR department as unnecessary.
In addition to being the world’s first successful mass-produced electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla is now also the first car manufacturer to completely abolish its PR department.
According to a source close to the company, the brand no longer has a PR team, which explains why Tesla has not responded to press inquiries for months. However, although the main global team based in the US has been disbanded, the company still has several PR managers in Europe and Asia.
Good or bad is not yet clear. Someone might argue that getting answers from time to time to questions from Elon Musk directly on Twitter is not the most productive strategy that Tesla could use.
It’s a curious decision, after all, but it’s unlikely that Tesla will agree to ditch its PR department unless the numbers prove the decision is effective. Also, while this is the first time in the auto industry, it is nothing new, for example, for tech giants (Apple is using a similar strategy).
