Such good paths – you need to stretch your legs. Results of the first stage of DakarJanuary 6, 2020
The unusually long starting stage of the Dakar 2020 rally raid brought the first dramas, sensations and patterns …
The main thing
Australian motorcycle racer Toby Price began the Dakar 2020 with what he finished last year’s rally marathon, namely with a victory at the stage, loudly and clearly indicating his ambitions and tasks. KTM racer is committed to defending the title of current winner. But competitors are also full of ambition. At least Ricky Brabek, two minutes behind Honda, seems to be able to compete with him. And another titled KTM racer Matthias Walkner, who finished third, will still say his word.
Returning to the saddle of the ATV after an unsuccessful experience in the all-terrain vehicle category, Ignassio Casale immediately marked a victory at the stage. And in the standings of SUVs, a real sensation was brought by the Lithuanian racer Vaidotas Jala, who left behind all the opponents, including the favorites Stefan Peteransel, Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyu. Meanwhile, in the standings of all-terrain vehicles, the first to finish was the Pole Arom Domzal, who was almost two minutes ahead of the American Casey Curie.
In the truck standings, the first victory for the KAMAZ-master team was brought by Anton Shibalov. The current triumph Eduard Nikolaev, after a breakdown in the cooling fans of the charge air cooler, was forced to slow down and finished only tenth with a lag of 11 minutes, but of course there will still be time to win back.
Performance of the day
The swift performance of Vaidotas Jaly will definitely go down in the history of Dakar. After all, it would seem that in a diverse area with increased demands on navigation, surprises on the first day are practically excluded. But the Lithuanian rally champion surprised. The 32-year-old racer entered his name on the list of winners of the special stages of Dakar and proved that his 12th place in the last year rally marathon was not at all random.
The participation of Romain Dumas in the rally-raid in Saudi Arabia ended, before even having a good start.
After eighth place last year, the Frenchman worked hard with the RD Limited team on fine-tuning the DXX, built on the basis of the Peugeot 2008 DKR. But, alas and ah, at the 65th kilometer the car caught fire. It was not possible to save the equipment. Such is the short third Dakar for the two-time winner of “24 hours of Le Mans”.
Statistics of the day
Ignassio Casale was the first racer in Dakar’s history to reach 20 wins on an ATV. The Chilean began his return to the category with what he stopped at in 2018 – with the fastest time at the stage. In short, a good bid for a third victory in the general classification.
Quote of the Day
Saulius Jurgellenas, navigator of Vaidotas Jaly: “After a break, we drove about 20 km and Vaidas says:“ Such good paths – you need to stretch your legs. ” Well, just like they took the pace, they did. On the one hand, we drove carefully so as not to break the wheels. On the other hand, quite stable. And so it turned out to win. When at the finish we were told, “How are the feelings of the first victory?”, We thought that they were joking. I say, “Stop joking,” and we are told, “No, no, we are not joking.” And when we believed, fans with Lithuanian flags pounced on us. I almost cried, it became so nice. ”
