Subaru WRX STI drove the 84-kilometer serpentine in 40 minutes
Subaru set a record for passing through Transfagaras highway in Romania, which is also called the “best road in the world”. Behind the wheel of a specially prepared WRX STI Type RA sedan, Mark Higgins, the three-time winner of the UK Rally Championship and the James Bond movie stuntman, was at the time of the race.
Transfagaras highway is a 84-kilometer road with 688 turns, of which 70 are under the first gear, and with serious differences in heights and a rise of more than two kilometers at sea level. For the sake of arrival all the way was completely blocked, but the first time it was not possible to set the record due to weather conditions.
Successful race was only the fourth attempt. As a result, Higgins drove all the highway in 40 minutes 58.08 seconds.
Prior to this, Higgins set a record for the legendary race on the Isle of Man, driving the same 600-strong Subaru STI Type RA, a 60-kilometer track in 17 minutes 49.75 seconds. In addition, the pilot drove the Nurburgring in 6 minutes 57.5 seconds, and also overcame the bobsleigh track on this car.
