Subaru says goodbye to the legendary EJ20 engineSeptember 25, 2019
The latest model equipped with this engine will be the Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition sedan, which will debut at the upcoming Tokyo motor show. EJ20 will cease to exist after 30 years of its conveyor life.
The four-cylinder boxer engine EJ20 with a two-liter displacement was tested on the first generation Subaru Legacy. The experiment turned out to be successful, and over the years this engine has acquired many modifications. The manufacturer experimented with the working volume, and also developed versions for its racing models. Currently, the only model with an EJ20 engine remains the 308-horsepower Subaru WRX STI super sedan, designed for the brand’s home market. In other countries, under the hood of this model is a 2.5-liter EJ25 engine, the life cycle of which, by the way, will also end soon. The brand itself now produces motors of the new FA / FB family.
As a farewell gift to fans of this legendary engine, Subaru will release a special version of the Subaru WRX STI sedan called Final Edition.
Such a car will receive a commemorative nameplate on the engine, 19-inch gold wheels, as well as a red decor on the rear bumper and grille and silver brake calipers. For an extra charge, the sedan will be equipped with Recaro seats. For the Japanese car market, the brand will produce 555 special WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition sedans. Reception of orders will be opened at the Tokyo Motor Show, which will open its doors at the end of October. All cars available for purchase are expected to be ordered before the end of 2019. But the latest copies will be released only in March 2020.
Recall that earlier our portal talked about the old Porsche motor for 220 thousand dollars, which could not find a buyer. Engines such as this one could be found on brand race cars in the middle of the last century.
