In Japan, the price of the new Forester Sport Turbo starts at 3,289,000 yen, which is 217,900 yen more expensive than the naturally aspirated Forester Sport.

In its previous incarnation, the Subaru Forester was available with the XT trim, which was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 hp. This version has been removed from the current lineup, leaving the Forester lagging behind its rivals such as the turbocharged Mazda CX-5 in terms of performance. Instead, the Forester is sold with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter flat-four with 182 hp. and 238 Nm of torque.

However, according to preliminary information, Subaru has finally endowed the new Forester Sport with a turbo engine: the 2.0-liter turbo unit of the previous model has been replaced by a new 1.8-liter turbo engine with 177 hp. and a torque of 300 Nm. That’s less power than the 2.5-liter unit, but the new turbocharged engine has 45 Nm more of torque. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a continuously variable transmission.

This is the same turbo unit found under the hood of the recently unveiled Subaru Levorg station wagon. Like the Levorg, the turbocharged Forester Sport is currently only available in Japan, and it’s unclear if Subaru plans to sell it outside the home market.

In addition to the new turbocharged engine, the Forester Sport has specially designed shock absorbers and coil springs for a sportier ride. The Forester Sport also features a tinted front grille, a roof spoiler and 18-inch wheels in dark-metal aluminum.

The interior has been updated with suede and leather seats, suede door trim and aluminum sports pedals. The dashboard also has a built-in camera that recognizes the driver’s face and adjusts the position of the seat, the angle of the rear-view mirror, air conditioning and other functions accordingly.
