SSC Tuatara hypercar could set a speed record

The Pahrump Valley Times reports that the Nevada Department of Transportation closed Highway 160 over the weekend after the SSC Tuatara was being tested at high speed.

The company confirmed that the brand’s engineers regularly conduct high-speed tests of their vehicles as part of the development process for the Tuatara hypercar. However, SSC officials said nothing about what exactly happened on that remote highway in Nevada.

The first $ 1.6 million Tuatara customer was delivered back in February after a lengthy development process that lasted nearly a decade. The body panels are designed by former Pininfarina designer Jason Castriota, and under the hood is a 5.9-liter twin-turbo V8. SSC claims this powerplant from the Nelson Racing Engine delivers up to 1,750 hp. power is simply an incomprehensible figure by any standard.

With regard to rumors of SSC attempts to set a production car speed record, many are wondering if the model can claim such a title. SSC officials say the hypercar is capable of speeds in excess of 480 km / h, allowing it to challenge the current speed record holders. But here things get a little more complicated: there are several methods with which you can check the maximum speed of the car.

Note that last year a specially modified Bugatti Chiron, Super Sport 300+, accelerated to 490 km / h on the famous Ehra-Lessien track, which the brand also used to accelerate the Veyron Super Sport to 431 km / h. But this run was measured by TÜV specialists in Germany, who does not require the vehicle to make two runs, one in opposite directions.
