Skoda is preparing Rapid second generationJuly 9, 2018
Skoda is preparing a compact second generation Rapid model. According to the publication of Autocar, production version for the Indian market will start in 2021. This is consistent with the statement of the head of the firm Bernhard Meyer, who promised to launch by the year 2020 a new crossover for the Indian market.
Now, under the name Rapid in India, they do not produce the same car that Russians know. In fact, it’s the Volkswagen Polo Sedan, the front end of which is redesigned in the Skoda’s spirit. Polo Sedan himself in India is named Vento.
In parallel with Rapid of the second generation, a new Volkswagen will be launched in India. Such a sedan under the name Virtus is already assembled in a factory in the Brazilian San Bernardo do Campo. According to Autocar, Skoda Rapid will keep the body of the sedan, but it will have significantly more differences from the related Volkswagen than the current model.
Both cars in the next generation will be much larger: thus, the wheelbase will grow from 2,553 to 2,650 millimeters. New sedans are built on the new modular platform MQB-A0, which is the basis of hatchbacks Skoda Fabia, Seat Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo of the current generation. Under the hood will be a three-cylinder engine with a capacity of one liter and a capacity of 116 horsepower.
In the European market, Skoda Rapid second generation is waiting for a different future. According to the British magazine Auto Express, it will lose the body liftback, which is not in demand outside the Czech Republic. The new Rapid will be produced exclusively in the form of a hatchback with a vertical fifth door.
