Shelby Mustang GT500 will challenge Camaro ZL1 and Challenger Hellcat with a new automatic transmissionMay 17, 2018
It seems that the leaders of Ford have finally bothered to hint to the brand’s fans and competitors that the legendary “Cobra” will soon acquire a lightning-fast character.
A turning point in the battle of American oil masters came at the end of 2014, when Dodge installed the obsolete Challenger Hellcat, built on the basis of the ancient Chrysler LC chassis, a 6.2-liter Hemi for 707 horses and a new ZF 8HP gearbox. Shelby Mustang GT500 against this combination was powerless: despite the fact that the “Cobra” with the change of generation noticeably lost weight (the current Mustang GT500 weighs more than 200 kilograms lighter than the “Infernal cat” Dodge), the six-speed manual Getrag or an automatic Ford 6RSO at the same speed nothing could do with competitors. Did not help them and the modern aluminum eight Coyote volume of 5.2 liters, which with the help of a compressor, depending on the special version, developed more than 700 horsepower. Dodge Challenger Hellcat and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 mercilessly win the start with the help of modern automatic transmission and launch-control.
However, everything can change in the very near future. On the YouTube channel of the popular Mustang6G forum there was an intriguing and very high quality video recording, as the brand new “Cobra” on the rainy day actively and very quickly “flips” the transmissions, which the fans of this special version had not seen before, while the test prototype was enveloped in camouflage. According to the users of the forum, under the hood of this prototype, there is certainly a compressor “Coyote” for eight cylinders, and it works either with a 7-speed automatic transmission with two clutches from the supercar GT (which is unlikely), or with a ten-speed automatic transmission, which Ford a few years ago, developed together with colleagues “on the shop” of GM.
Judging by the light camouflage and smooth operation of the gearbox, the official presentation is not to wait for the official presentation, and the owners of the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, as well as the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, should prepare for the fact that the “brutal” “Cobra” will rush into fights with them with renewed strength.
By the way, Ford Mustang still confidently wins the battle for the purse from its competitors. Last year, the brand sold 81,866 copies of this model, while Dodge sold 64,537 copies of the Challenger, and Chevrolet 67,940 units of the Camaro coupe.
