Segway will complete the production of electric cyclesJune 24, 2020
The American company announced its intention to stop selling balancing electric scooters – a two-wheeled model with a high steering wheel Segway PT (Personal Transporter).
In the early 2000s, it was thanks to the Segway PT model that this type of transport gained its popularity. The idea of its creation belongs to the inventor Dean Kamenom, the author of the “self-balancing” iBOT wheelchair with a motor. At the time of the start of sales in 2001, an electric scooter was offered at a price of 5 thousand dollars.
The design of the model is two wheels arranged coaxially. The Segway vehicle is automatically balanced when the position of the body of the rider changes; For this purpose, an indicator stabilization system is used: signals from gyroscopic and liquid tilt sensors are fed to microprocessors that generate electrical signals that act on the engines and control their movements. Each wheel of a Segway vehicle is driven by its electric motor, which responds to changes in the equilibrium of the machine.
The inventor spent about ten years on the development of the Segway Inc. vehicle, introduced to the public in 2001. However, in 2009, Kamen sold the company, after which it was given to the Chinese manufacturer of two-wheeled electric scooters Ninebot. The production of Segway PT at the factory in Bedford (New Hampshire, USA) will be discontinued on July 15 this year, and 21 employees will be fired.
