Sales of new cars in the world in May fell by a thirdJune 20, 2020
The automotive industry continues to be in crisis due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, in some regions there has already been a positive trend.
Experts published information regarding sales of new cars in the world in May. Last month, the volume of sales of new cars amounted to 5 million 087 thousand units, which is 33.3% lower than in May 2019. The absolute leader again became China, in the territory of which 2 million 078 thousand new cars were sold. Thus, in May, the share of the Middle Kingdom car market accounted for 40% of all cars sold. Also note that the market for new cars in China grew by 10%, which was the first growth in almost 3 years.
The US car market was in second position with a result of 1 million 129 thousand cars sold (-28.8%). In Western Europe, sales decline is more significant – last month dealers were able to sell 623.6 thousand new cars – a minus of 57.9%. However, compared with March and April, there has been a positive trend. In Eastern Europe, 172.1 thousand new cars were sold, which is 50.4% less than in the same period last year.
Sales in South America declined the most – by the end of May, 76.2 thousand cars sold (-71.7%) were recorded. Sales in the Japanese car market continue to decline – last month, residents of the Land of the Rising Sun bought 215.3 thousand new cars (-45%). But the South Korean market returned to sustainable growth – 165.7 thousand units. and an increase of 10.1%. We also note Canada with a result of 113.2 thousand cars sold and a 44% drop in sales. From the beginning of January to the end of May, 26 million 224 thousand new cars were sold in the world, which is 29.7% less than last year’s figure for the same period.
