Sales of Lexus EC 2019 with cameras instead of mirrors began in JapanOctober 24, 2018
Lexus has introduced the seventh generation ES sedan to the Japanese market
In Japan, sales of the seventh generation Lexus ES sedan began, which became the first production model with cameras instead of side mirrors. The novelty is a compact modules with aerodynamic design, transmitting the image on the displays installed in the lower part of the front pillars.
The small size of the cameras is designed to improve visibility and reduce wind noise. The design of the modules makes them unaffected by precipitation: it almost completely eliminates the accumulation of snow and accumulation of water on the chambers.
The image from the “virtual” mirrors is broadcast on the five-inch displays installed in the lower part of the front pillars. The system automatically activates the desired field of view – the left side, the right and behind the car – when turning the turn signals or reverse gear. The driver can also manually activate the cameras to expand the peripheral view of the area around the car.
First announced the use of cameras on the serial car Audi. Almost the same solution as the “Lexus”, the company planned to use on the electric crossover e-tron. However, due to problems with the battery supplier and the internal software of the SUV, its sales were postponed for at least a month.
