2-time classic rally world champion joins electric off-road racing
As it became known to AutoTimesNews, 58-year-old Carlos Sainz – the father of the McLaren driver in F1 – will sit behind the wheel of the Odyssey 21 E-SUV of Alejandro Agag’s new championship next year.
The winner of three Dakar victories, the last of which he won this season, met Odyssey during the January marathon in Saudi Arabia. Then the organizers allowed the electric pickup to start the final special stage of the race, where it was driven by Ken Block.
According to available information, Sainz then held talks with Agag, and in October he took part in tests of the 550-strong Odyssey in the south of France. Valtteri Bottas and Sebastien Loeb also took part in those races.
As it became known to AutoTimesNews. Sainz has already agreed with one of the teams in the performances for the 2021 season, which will begin in March and will consist of five stages.
His partner – the crew, according to the rules, consists of a man and a woman – will be Laia Sans, who finished ten times in the Dakar while driving a motorcycle. The Spaniard also has experience in circuit and rally-cross competitions in a car.
