Robert Schwartzman – champion of the International Formula 3September 28, 2019
SMP Racing participant and student at the Ferrari Racing Academy Robert Schwartzman finished second in the first Formula 3 race at Sochi Autodrom and ahead of schedule won the 2019 world title.
The 20-year-old racer from St. Petersburg started from the pole position and missed his Prema teammate Marcus Armstrong on the first lap. And at the restart on the seventh lap Nico Kari overtook him.
But even third place was enough for Schwartzman to win the championship, given that his only rival in the individual standings, Jehan Daruwala, was only sixth. And Robert, even with the victory of the Indian rider was enough seventh place.
Nevertheless, Schwartzman did not content himself with simply getting to the finish line. On the 12th lap, he took advantage of Armstrong’s mistake and climbed to second place, and on the 13th he overtook Kari, becoming a leader.
Fast enough, Robert left his rivals, creating a backlog of 1-1.5 seconds. But two laps before the finish Armstrong accelerated the pace and on the last lap caught up with and overtook the Russian pilot, after which he rushed to victory. Schwartzman tried to counterattack, but the matter as such did not come to a fight.
But a second place was enough for Robert to close the issue with the champion title. Thus, he became the second Russian driver after Daniil Kvyat in GP3, who became the champion in the framework of Formula 1 support races.
“I do not even know what to say. Just super! I never felt like that, ”Robert shared his impressions in a closed park. – Many thanks to all the fans and the team, all who supported me. Now we need to rethink everything, understand what we have achieved, and move on. ”
